My family has deep roots on Edisto Island, and I was able to move here with my husband in 2019 to land passed down through many generations of my ancestors. I grew up down the coast a bit in Fernandina Beach, Florida, and have been a lifelong student and practitioner of the visual arts, following the examples of my mother and grandmothers. Despite having lived for years in Atlanta and Seattle, much of my artwork has been influenced by the landscape of the coastal South. It has been exhibited in galleries and other venues in numerous one-person and group regional and national shows.
I work in oil painting and also make small sculptures and assemblages. I paint and sketch outdoors and put together imagined scenes in the studio. My main concerns in my art are exploring and responding to the environment as it relates to the psyche. Landscape and natural objects are my primary subjects and tend to be symbolic rather than specific, although it is important to me to render form and space realistically for the technical challenge and to draw in the viewer. To this end, I plan to work more often “en plein air” on Edisto.
